Into the wilds
Good news, we got an update that Diggory is doing well and was released back into the wild on Monday!
Special thanks to all those who supported Dollars for Diggory and donated money to Flintcreek Wildlife Rehab on her behalf.
A huge thank you to everyone at Flintcreek who took such good care of her! We hope that she grows stronger and continues to do well.
HAPPY SQUIRREL APPRECIATION DAY!
From all of us, fuzzy and otherwise, we hope you have a day full of squirrelly abundance and joy! Take time to go to the park today or just step outside for some fresh air, say hello to a squirrel and wish them a day full of tall trees with bushy branches, warm sunshine, loads of acorns…and the occasional french fry (though it really isn’t good for them). The point is, take time for the simple things and appreciate what is around you. Have a great day!
Diggory do dah
I got a call back from Flint Creek the other night with an update on our Diggory and some really useful information…
First, Diggory is eating which is good but still showing slight neurological symptoms. They are keeping her throw till spring so keep that in mind when you read the next information.
Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation takes in over 3,600 animals per year, about 20 a day, and each animal costs roughly 50.00 per month in care between food, rehab, lodging, medicine, etc. So while 3.00 is appreciated it really isn’t much use. And by the time you take out bank fees they only receive about 2.50 of that 3.00. So, with that in mind…
ANY donation is appreciated but $50.00 will provide one month’s care. If you cannot donate, keep Diggory in your thoughts and prayers!
Please, if you donate, drop me an email so we can add you to our thank you list and it will help us track the donations. Flint Creek cannot track them on their end.
Thank you!
Update and Diggory no. SIX
Catching up. Been fighting off an abscessed tooth for the last 4 weeks and have been in too much pain to function most of the time, swamped with work before that. Dental appointment this Thursday finally so hope to be back to normal soon. Have three issues to get out this weekend but Diggory wanted me to stay on track so…
Issue Six asks: How do you organize your story; do you use tools like outlines, index cards, or storyboards, etc or do you have a formula from start to finish?
I will post an update with links to the other issues tomorrow. Hope this finds you all well and in good creative spirits!
Diggory Update
I have an update from Flint Creek Wildlife Rehab on our little mascot, the REAL Diggory. Two things.
First, Diggory’s neurological symptoms have improved slightly. An eye exam found a tear in the left cornea.
Second, Diggory is a GIRL. O_O
Hmm, my doesn’t THAT just change a few things. haha I have since pulled ‘his’ bio though from the Diggory page though and put up information on the real Dig but it was kind of funny7 to find out ‘he’ was a ‘she’.
Thank you again to Flint Creek Wildlife Rehab for taking such good care of our Diggory. If you would, please take a moment and donate just three dollars to Flint Creek to help with Dig’s recovery. If you make a donation, let us know and we will add you to Diggory’s friends!
Diggory update!
UPDATE: Just found two posts on Flint Creek’s Twitter. He does have neurological symptoms, 50 foot was a long way to fall, but he is eating so our fingers are crossed. Follow them for updates and/or you can follow us at CheapSquirrel.
Diggory is now with Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation. Having found him, Ann Marie, my director at PetsNPatients in Chicago, had to find a rehabber in the area that would take him and give him a chance. He needed to be warm and fight off dehydration which is what most animals in the wild are suffering from when found.
By law, Ann Marie was not able to keep him more than 48 hours. I looked into becoming a Florida Wildlife Rehabilitator but the process would be too extensive for me at this point to do him any good.
Emailing Flint Creek today to see if I can get an update on Diggory and see if there is a way we can spread a little publicity love to help both Diggory and Flint Creek in their mission.
I will post more updates and photos as soon as I get them!
Meet, the Diggory!
As promised, here are photos of our little mascot!
:::squirrelly dance of joy:::
Backstory: As most of you know, I am the Creative Director for PetsNPatients, a Chicago-based non-profit. Ann Marie, my director and good friend, just emailed me that they picked up an adolescent squirrel from someone’s yard this afternoon and they are caring for him. And I got to name him. :)
A note about baby squirrels:
In most states, it is illegal to keep wildlife for more than 48 hours without a wildlife permit. Click here to find a rehabilitator in your area.
For more information about what to do if you find a baby squirrel, please check out the following sites:

We have a REAL Diggory!

She will keep me posted on how he is, he is young and needs a lot of care so we are hoping he makes it. He’s a real daredevil, poor little guy, as he made a 50 foot drop. Please keep our little Diggory in your thoughts over the next few days. Send him acorn dreams and healing wishes. Thank you.
I will post photos of our little adopted mascot as soon as I get them!
New cover series
As a designer, I am always looking for new ways to present things. I was finding the covers for Three Dollar Squirrel a bit dull (sorry Diggory) and had a college assignment that required me to redesign a current project so I took advantage of the opportunity.
Being that Three Dollar Squirrel is strictly digital now, it afforded me a little more flexibility on color use. Enlisting Diggory’s help, we have been working hard on the new covers for our little zine and hope you like them.
Note: These are the full covers as they would appear laid open flat. The front cover is the right hand portion with the back rounding out the picture on the left.
This little guy is our zine’s trademark.

My daughter, now 8, drew this squirrel a couple of years ago and I could not resist using him. She was thrilled to be able to help with the zine.

This little typewriter is actually from an Artistamp ATC, entitled Ode to Story, that I had designed for my paper arts group swap.

This little guy is actually Diggory, or one of his many incarnations. This is “comic strip Diggory” who hopes to someday be a one-panel cartoon.

This design is also from an Artistamp ATC that I created, Inkblot 37.

Diggory likes how they turned out and suggested we make them into downloadable wallpapers so keep your eyes here for them!
Mexican Squirrel Wrestling
[ Warning: Loud music on site. ]
Yes. You read that right. Mexican Squirrel Wrestling. Watch Tito and Paco, the Loco Luchadores, battle it out…
Diggory’s comment on the topic? “I’m a lover not a fighter…and I don’t do tights.”
And there you have it.
